Balakong is a rapidly evolving township in the Hulu Langat District of Selangor. Once a Chinese New Village and rubber/tin-mining area, it has transformed into a mixed-use suburb with residential, commercial, and industrial components. Its strategic location, growing amenities and improving connectivity make it a popular choice for families and commuters alike. 1
Balakong began as a Chinese New Village during the British colonial period, especially under measures like the Briggs Plan during the Malayan Emergency. 31 It was surrounded by rubber plantations and former tin-mining sites. 031 The name “Balakong” is said to derive from the river Sungai Balak, and “-kong” possibly from the Hakka word for river or denoting location. There were upper and lower parts of the “kong” associated with the village. 31
Balakong features a mix of older village components and rapid suburban development. Residential estates (terraces, condominiums) dominate many areas, while light industrial and commercial zones sit adjacent. 131 The demographic includes families, working professionals, and a sizeable Chinese community, reflecting its origins. Amenities have expanded: schools, restaurants, retail outlets, malls. 14
