Kelana Jaya is a dynamic township located within Petaling Jaya, Selangor. It is a well-established residential and commercial area known for its central location, scenic lakes, and strong transport connections via the LRT Kelana Jaya Line. Home to a mix of older neighbourhoods and new developments, Kelana Jaya offers a blend of suburban comfort and city convenience. 1
Kelana Jaya was developed in the 1970s as part of Petaling Jaya’s suburban expansion to accommodate the growing middle class of Kuala Lumpur. The area was planned around a series of man-made lakes, providing both aesthetic and recreational value. 2
Kelana Jaya was originally called Sea Port. It was renamed to Kelana Jaya in 1983, with the proclamation made by then Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sallahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah, who renamed the area after his uncle Tengku Kelana Jaya Putra. The proclamation was made when His Royal Highness was officiating the Pilgrimage Complex (Kompleks Jemaah Haji) at Seri Setia.
Kelana Jaya is believed to have been named after Tengku Musa Eddin (1893-1955)1, the eldest son of Sultan Alaeddin. Born in Jugra in 1893, he was made Crown Prince or Tengku Mahkota. However the throne eluded him, and went instead to Tengku Alam Shah, because the British Resident Theodore Samuel Adams blocked his ascend, alleging misbehaviour on the part of Tengku Musa Eddin, whom he accused of being extravagant. Tengku Musa Eddin was given the title of Tengku Kelana Jaya Putera. In addition to the Petaling Jaya neighbourhood of Kelana Jaya, Jalan Tengku Kelana in Klang was also named after him.
Initially a primarily residential neighbourhood, Kelana Jaya evolved into a thriving mixed-use township, attracting corporate offices, retail centres, and educational institutions. Its name, derived from “Kelana” (wanderer or traveller), reflects its role as a dynamic urban hub. 3
Kelana Jaya is characterised by its lakeside setting, family-oriented neighbourhoods, and balanced urban planning. It offers a mature suburban environment with tree-lined streets, recreational parks, and a variety of amenities including shopping malls, schools, and healthcare centres. 4
The area is also known for its sporting facilities such as the Kelana Jaya Sports Complex and the MBPJ Stadium, making it a hub for local sports events. 5
The property market in Kelana Jaya is diverse, featuring established landed homes, high-rise condominiums, and commercial developments. Mature residential precincts like SS5, SS6, and SS7 remain popular among families due to their proximity to schools, shopping areas, and transport facilities. 6
Recent developments have introduced modern serviced apartments and mixed-use projects such as Paradigm Mall and Paradigm Residence, reflecting the area’s growing urban appeal. Property values remain strong, supported by its prime location within the Klang Valley. 7
Kelana Jaya is highly accessible via major roads and expressways including the Damansara–Puchong Expressway (LDP, E11) and the Federal Highway. It also connects seamlessly to Subang Jaya, Petaling Jaya town centre, and Kuala Lumpur. 8
The LRT Kelana Jaya Line serves the area with stations at Kelana Jaya and Taman Bahagia. Several RapidKL bus routes and feeder services further enhance local mobility, linking the township to major business districts. 9
Kelana Jaya lent its name to the LRT Kelana Jaya Line, one of the Klang Valley’s main rapid transit lines, which originally terminated at the Kelana Jaya station before being extended to Putra Heights. 10
