Jugra is a historic town located along the banks of the Sungai Langat in the Banting area of Kuala Langat District, Selangor. Once the royal capital of Selangor in the late 19th century, Jugra holds immense historical significance as the seat of the early Selangor sultans. Today, it is a quiet, scenic settlement known for its cultural heritage, colonial-era remnants, and natural attractions like Bukit Jugra. 1
Jugra rose to prominence in the mid-19th century when Sultan Abdul Samad (r. 1857–1898) established it as his royal seat in 1859. In fact he had been living there since 1857, prefering Jugra over Kuala Selangor, as he found Jugra to be more peaceful. Interestingly, he called the site in Jugra where he had his palace "Bandar" meaning town, and today, that site is called Kampung Bandar, or "town village". During that time, instead of Kuala Langat District, there was simply Langat. Sultan Abdul Samad built his palace, known as Istana Jugra or Istana Bandar. His mausoleum today commands a strategic position on a hill above the town. The town was strategically located along the Sungai Langat, serving as an administrative and trading hub for Selangor’s early rulers. 2
The area became home to palaces such as Istana Bandar and administrative buildings that reflected both Malay and colonial influences. When Klang and later Kuala Lumpur grew in prominence due to tin mining, the royal seat moved, leaving Jugra as a quieter historical town. 3
