Kota Damansara is a large and vibrant township located in Petaling Jaya, Selangor. Once part of the Sungai Buloh forest reserve, it has transformed into one of the Klang Valley’s most diverse and rapidly developing urban areas. The township features a mix of residential, commercial, and institutional zones, making it both a desirable address and a major suburban centre northwest of Kuala Lumpur.
The area now known as Kota Damansara was once covered by the Sungai Buloh Forest Reserve, gazetted during the British colonial era1. Development began in the 1990s as part of Selangor’s effort to expand Petaling Jaya’s northern corridor. The township was planned as an integrated urban community combining residential and commercial sectors. Its name—“Kota” meaning “city” or “fort,” and “Damansara” referring to the wider Damansara region—reflects both its urban aspirations and geographical heritage2.
Kota Damansara spans over 4,000 acres, divided into multiple sections, each with its own character. Among these are Section 5 (PJU 5) and Section 8 (PJU 8), featuring modern commercial hubs such as Dataran Sunway and The Strand. Residential areas range from medium-cost apartments to luxury gated communities like Tropicana Indah and Damansara Legenda. The township’s master plan also reserves green spaces and institutional zones, maintaining a balance between urban density and environmental sustainability3.
One of the township’s defining features is the Kota Damansara Community Forest Reserve (KDCF), a remnant of the original forest that once covered the area. The reserve spans over 800 acres and provides hiking and biking trails managed by community volunteers. It serves as an important green lung for residents and plays a key role in preserving biodiversity within the greater Klang Valley4.
Kota Damansara hosts a number of reputable educational institutions, including SEGi University, SEGi College, and Sri KDU International School. These institutions attract both local and international students, contributing to the township’s youthful and cosmopolitan atmosphere. Several government and private schools also serve the area, along with kindergartens and preschools within residential precincts5.
Kota Damansara is well-connected via major highways, including the New Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE, E1), Damansara–Puchong Expressway (LDP, E11), and SPRINT Expressway (E23). The MRT Kajang Line serves the township with several stations—Kota Damansara, Surian, and Mutiara Damansara—providing convenient rail access to Kuala Lumpur and Kajang6. Internal roads like Persiaran Surian and Persiaran Mahogani form the main arteries within the township, linking residential sectors with shopping and commercial areas.
The township’s commercial appeal is centred around The Strand and Dataran Sunway, both known for dining, entertainment, and retail options. Nearby, Tropicana Gardens Mall serves as a modern shopping destination directly linked to the Surian MRT Station. These facilities, combined with easy access to Mutiara Damansara’s IKEA and The Curve, have cemented Kota Damansara’s status as one of Selangor’s most dynamic suburban centres7.
As of October 2025, Kota Damansara continues to see strong demand for both residential and commercial properties. Condominiums are priced between RM500,000 and RM1.2 million, while landed homes in gated communities can reach RM2 million and above. The township’s popularity among professionals and families ensures a stable rental market, averaging between RM1,800 and RM4,500 per month8.
The Kota Damansara Community Forest Reserve is not only a nature park but also a social movement — it was saved from development through the efforts of local residents who formed the Friends of Kota Damansara group to lobby for its preservation in the early 2000s9.
