The namesake, Chee Swee Cheng 徐垂青, is often called Baba Chee as he is the sixth generation to be born in the Malay peninsula. His family is also one of the oldest in Malacca. By the time Chee Swee Cheng was born on 13 December, 1866, his family has become one of the richest in town, with business enterprises extending far and wide. Chee Swee Cheng is a Hokkien. His forefather Chee Soo Sum (1689-1752) left Zhangzhou prefecture in Fujian Province, China to seek his fortune in Malacca1. This followed the collapse of the Ming Dynasty to the Manchus, which resulted in mass departure of refugees to Southeast Asia, taking advantage of the Hokkien's maritime knowledge.
