Ampang Park MRT Station (PY20) is an underground interchange station on the MRT Putrajaya Line, located beneath Jalan Ampang at the edge of Kuala Lumpur’s Golden Triangle1. The station serves as an important transfer point between the MRT Putrajaya Line and the LRT Kelana Jaya Line, providing direct connectivity between two of the city’s major rapid transit corridors.
The MRT section of the station began operations on 16 March 2023 as part of Phase Two of the Putrajaya Line project, while the adjoining Ampang Park LRT Station has been operational since 1 June 19992. The two stations are connected via an underground pedestrian link, forming one of the most significant interchange nodes in the Klang Valley rail network.
Ampang Park MRT Station lies approximately 3.5 kilometres east of Dataran Merdeka, the traditional Zero Mile of Kuala Lumpur3. It is located between Raja Uda MRT Station (PY19) to the northwest and Persiaran KLCC MRT Station (PY21) to the southeast.
Ampang Park MRT Station is strategically situated within Kuala Lumpur’s commercial and diplomatic zone, serving commuters who work or reside near Jalan Ampang, Jalan Tun Razak, and Jalan Kia Peng. The area is home to corporate offices, embassies, luxury hotels, and retail establishments that form part of the city’s Golden Triangle district4.
The station derives its name from the now-demolished Ampang Park Shopping Centre, Malaysia’s first shopping mall, which opened in 1973 and closed in 2018 to make way for the MRT project5.
The Ampang Park MRT Station serves as a major interchange between the MRT Putrajaya Line and the LRT Kelana Jaya Line. The interchange is facilitated through an underground pedestrian link that allows commuters to transfer seamlessly between the two systems without exiting the paid area6.
From this station, commuters can access destinations along the Kelana Jaya Line, including KLCC LRT Station, Dang Wangi LRT Station, and Masjid Jamek LRT Station, as well as reach MRT destinations such as Titiwangsa MRT Station and Putrajaya Sentral MRT Station.
The underground station’s design integrates modern architectural aesthetics with functionality. The platform area features a spacious island layout with natural-colour finishes, LED lighting, and safety barriers along the tracks. The concourse level includes clear directional signage to guide passengers transferring between MRT and LRT lines7.
The station offers amenities such as escalators, elevators, fare gates, customer service counters, restrooms, and ticket vending machines. Entrances are located along Jalan Ampang and Jalan Tun Razak to serve both business and residential commuters. The entire station is designed for full accessibility by people with disabilities8.

The interchange at Ampang Park MRT Station plays a critical role in the integration of Kuala Lumpur’s rail network, linking the MRT Putrajaya Line with the LRT Kelana Jaya Line. It allows smoother travel between the city centre, northern suburbs such as Kepong, and southern destinations including Putrajaya9.
The station also enhances access to nearby high-density business zones, improving public transport options and reducing dependence on private vehicles along the often congested Jalan Ampang corridor10.
Ampang Park was Malaysia’s first-ever shopping mall, opened in 1973, decades before the development of modern shopping centres like Suria KLCC or Pavilion Kuala Lumpur. Although the mall was demolished in 2018, its name continues to live on through the MRT and LRT stations11.
