Kampung Kolam Park is a public park proposed by the
George Town Special Area Plan. The park, already existing today, is the landscaped area around the
Tomb of Cauder Mydin Merican, the founder of the
Kapitan Keling Mosque
.
Appreciating the History of this Site
The area was originally land belonging to the Indian Muslim community. Until the first quarter of the 20th century, it was surrounded by the Indian Muslim village of
Kampung Kolam, which got its name from the ablution tanks of the mosque. Due to the densely constructed village houses, Dr Sun Yat Sen chose nearby
120 Armenian Street as his Penang base, to allow hasty exit should his base be raided by the authorities.
The Kampung Kolam area underwent much transformation in the 20th century, with the former village houses replaced by a street - also bearing the name Kampung Kolam - and brick shophouses.
