As with many of the roads in this part of George Town, Jalan Kampar was named after a town in Malaysia, in which case, the town of Kampar in Perak. The road was established in the early 20th century. Originally a village road, it has since been paved and developed.
The most important site along Jalan Kampar is the Theravada Buddhist temple, Mahindarama. Among the properties along Kampar Road include the Taman Kampar Apartments.
