Jalan Tanjong Tokong is a major road on the north side of George Town. It is the main artery for the Tanjong Tokong neighbourhood. Jalan Tanjong Tokong starts at the intersection with Jalan Bagan Jermal, Kelawei Road and Gurney Drive. The road continues as Jalan Tanjung Bungah after the Chinese Swimming Club.
Jalan Tanjong Tokong was once a semi rural road. The Royal Australian Air Force has a recreation club for its servicemen here. That site has now been redevelopment into Island Plaza. Nowadays Jalan Tanjong Tokong is witnessing rapid redevelopment, as landed properties make way for high-rise luxury condominiums. The area is a choice residential neighbourhood due to the scenic view of George Town from here.
The road lining of Jalan Tanjong Tokong (as of February 2016) is poorly conceived, forcing motorists on the fast lane to swerve to the left lane at each approaching intersection. The fast lane on the southbound side disappears at the approach to Tulang Corner while a new lane emerges on the left. This forces motorists to switch lanes. The poorly conceived road alignment is a danger to those unfamiliar with Jalan Tanjong Tokong.
