Hargreaves Road was named after William Hargreaves, who served as the headmaster of Penang Free School from 1891 until 1904. The school honoured him by having one of the sport houses named Hargreaves. The Hargreave House has brown as its house colour. He took appointment as the first headmaster of the Malay College Kuala Kangsar, which he served from 1905 to 1918.
