Bangkok Lane, Pulau Tikus, Penang (24 February 2007)
Bangkok Lane, or Lorong Bangkok, is a minor road in the Pulau Tikus district of George Town. It is immediately behind Wat Chaiyamangkalaram, the famous reclining Buddha temple, which is on Burmah Lane.
Bangkok Lane is lined on both sides with beautiful double-storey semi-detached houses. Originally built in the 1920s as residences, many have since been converted to commercial use, and houses cafés and boutiques.
Bangkok Lane connects Burmah Road to Kelawei Road. As with many of the roads in Pulau Tikus, the name of Bangkok Lane is reflective of the Thai and Burmese communities that used to settle in that area.
On both sides of Bangkok Lane are handsome pre-war residential houses built in 1928 by Cheah Leong Kah. The architect who designed them was Chew Eng Eam, who also designed the Loke Thye Kee.
The nearest bus stop is at Burmah Road and Kelawei Road. Rapid Penang Bus 104 pass through Burmah Road near Bangkok Lane while 103 pass through Kelawei Road.
