City Pillar Shrine, or Lak Muang, is a shrine dedicated to the protective deity at the founding of a Thai town. Every Thai town is likely to have one city pillar shrine.
The city pillar shrine of Rayong was originally built of wood, but was later rebuilt in concrete. It bears some Chinese characters, testifying that the builders or designers were Chinese, or in some way had Chinese sponsorship. The old city pillar was located in front of the city pillar shrine, but when the shrine was rebuilt, a new city pillar was erected within a four-porched shelter.
