Ranong ระนอง is a town on the Isthmus of Kra. It faces the Andaman Sea on the west coast, a short distance from the Myanmar border, where the town of Kawthaung (formerly known as Victoria Point) is located. Ranong is about half way between Bangkok and the Malaysian border at Bukit Kayu Hitam.
The town of Ranong was one of the many tin mining areas in southern Thailand in the early part of the 20th century. Many of the settlers here were Chinese from the Hokkien language group. The town has a few attractions of its own, although most people come here on their way to Kawthaung, to visit the only casino in Myanmar.
