Phuket makes an excellent springboard for visiting some of the nearby destinations in southern Thailand. Some of these such as Krabi and Khao Lak, have gained a reputation of their own as tourist destinations, while others are still going through the process of development.

A visit to the neighbouring destinations provides you a glimpse into the rural way of life in southern Thailand, something often absent in over-commercialized Phuket. There are beautiful waterfalls, hot-springs to visit, along with the occasional Thai Buddhist temple, cave temple and other wonderful sights.
The islands located surrounding Phuket are pristine. Perhaps the most famous is Phi Phi, which has gained world renown as the location of the movie The Beach. On the western coast, to the northwest of Phuket are the Similan Islands, an excellent destination for snorkelling and diving.
