Laguna Phuket (GPS: 8.00177, 98.29407) is an award-winning resort development in
Central Western Phuket. It comprises a handful of luxury resorts around a former tin-mining pool that was rehabilitated.
By the time tin mining came to an end in the area, the mining pools were so polluted with toxic waste that the United Nations, in a 1977 report, proclaimed the site "too environmentally damaged to have any development potential".
Despite the bleak proclamation, the Laguna Phuket project proved its detractors wrong when it set forth to rehabilitate the wasteland. This involved the installation of an integrated wastewater purification system that recycles the water used. The whole area underwent a massive facelift. It included the removal and replacement of the topsoil and the replanting of hardy plants to survive the harsh environment. Four years and US$200 million later, Laguna Phuket began to garner environmental and hospital awards.
Although the Laguna Phuket development was not without its controversy and scandal, the project not only introduced greenery to an otherwise barren stretch of Phuket, it also brought employment to the people of the area.
In 1987 the Dusit Thani Laguna Resort was the first resort to open its doors at Laguna Phuket. Since then many others have followed including the LHC Phuket Resort, Allamanda Laguna Phuket, The Banyan Tree, Laguna Holiday Club Phuket Resort, The Palm Beach Club, HotelLaguna Phuket Holiday Residence Hotel, and the crown jewel of the development, the Sheraton Grande Laguna Phuket.
