Wat Saen Fang วัดแสนฝาง , Chiang Mai

Wat Saen Fang, Chiang MaiWat Saen Fang, Chiang Mai (24 October, 2006)

Wat Saen Fang (GPS: 18.78911, 98.99869; Thai: วัดแสนฝาง ) is a Thai Buddhist monastery along Thapae Road, at the junction with Chang Moi Tud Mai Road, in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The monastery dates back to the 14th century, though none of its buildings are that old. The entire temple complex is surrounded by a high wall, with openings at Tha Pae Road and Chang Moi Tud Mai Road.

Wat Saen Fang is entered from a roofed gate house that is two storeys tall. From there, the approach to the temple courtyard is via a walkway with undulating naga-makara balustrades on both sides.

To the left of the driveway, beyond a red fence, is the ho trai (scripture hall), which is built of teak in 1869 and painted red. It stands on stilts above a pond.

The chedi of Wat Saen Fang is Burmese style. It kind of looks like a smaller version of the Shwedagon. It is at the centre of a jumble of spires.

To the west of the chedi is the ubosot (ordination hall) and another ho trai.

The viharn (assembly hall) of Wat Saen Fang is an impressive building that was originally the ho kham (palace, literally "gilded hall") of the ruler, Chao Kawilorot in the 1860s. It was dismantled and reassembled here to function as the viharn of his monastery by Chao Kawilorot's successor, Chao Inthanon, in 1878.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
