Lorong Melur is a road in Taman Sin Tat, Butterworth. It connects Jalan Raja Uda in the east to Tingkat Melur 1 in the west. The road is characterised by a bustling commercial stretch near its eastern end, transitioning into a quiet residential area further west.
Lorong Melur begins at its eastern junction with Jalan Raja Uda, one of Butterworth’s busiest thoroughfares. This section of the road is lined with coffee shops and small eateries on both sides, serving residents and visitors alike. The commercial activity here is concentrated close to Jalan Raja Uda, benefiting from the steady flow of traffic.
Further west, beyond the lively shops, the character of the road changes into a peaceful residential environment. Here, two-storey terrace houses line both sides of Lorong Melur, with an open space between the two lanes of traffic. This central space is commonly used by locals as a parking area, providing convenience to residents and visitors.
The name Melur in Malay refers to the jasmine flower, known for its fragrant white blossoms. The naming follows the common practice in Butterworth neighbourhoods of using floral and botanical themes for local roads. In Malay culture, the jasmine is a flower often associated with purity and traditional ceremonies.
The land use along Lorong Melur reflects a blend of commerce and residential living. The eastern section, near Jalan Raja Uda, is commercialised with coffee shops, food outlets, and other small businesses, making it a popular area for casual dining. Beyond this zone, the road is predominantly residential, featuring double-storey terrace houses designed for families.
The open central space separating the two lanes adds to the functionality of the road, serving as a communal parking area. This arrangement eases congestion in the residential section, especially during peak dining hours at the eastern eateries.
Lorong Melur is easily accessible from Jalan Raja Uda, a major artery of Butterworth. The road also connects to Tingkat Melur 1 in the west, linking it to other streets within Taman Sin Tat. Public transport options, such as Rapid Penang buses, are available along Jalan Raja Uda, making Lorong Melur conveniently reachable though not directly served by bus routes.
The immediate surroundings of Lorong Melur reflect its dual nature. The commercial eastern end is part of the vibrant food scene of Jalan Raja Uda, where locals and visitors can find affordable hawker fare and coffee shops. In contrast, the western residential portion provides a quieter environment suitable for family living. Amenities such as schools, markets, and petrol stations are also found within short driving distance.
Lorong Melur developed as part of Taman Sin Tat during the suburban growth of Butterworth in the late 20th century. Initially designed as a residential street, its proximity to Jalan Raja Uda encouraged the growth of commercial activity at its eastern end. Over time, coffee shops and eateries flourished there, integrating Lorong Melur into the wider food culture of Butterworth while preserving its residential character further west.
