Union Square (GPS: 5.41872, 100.34243) is a compact urban plaza and “pocket park” tucked behind heritage shophouses off Lebuh Union in the World Heritage city of George Town, Penang. Conceived as both a climate‑adaptation pilot and a cultural landmark, the square commemorates the golden jubilee of the George Town–Adelaide sister‑city relationship.[1]

History and Purpose

Union Square occupies what was once an under‑utilised back‑lane in George Town’s commercial core. Beginning in 2022 the lane was re‑imagined by the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) under the Penang Nature‑Based Climate Adaptation Programme (PNBCAP), proving how modest infill spaces can be retrofitted to reduce heat while providing shade, rest and greenery.[3]

The square is the latest milestone in a five‑year MBPP plan to upgrade 9 km of service lanes and add 10 acres (4 ha) of green pockets within the UNESCO core zone.[5]

The Sister‑City Jubilee

The George Town–Adelaide friendship, established in 1974, is Malaysia’s oldest active sister‑city link. It rests on intertwined colonial histories: George Town was founded in 1786 by Captain Francis Light, while Adelaide was laid out fifty years later by his son Colonel William Light.

On 9 August 2024 MBPP Mayor Datuk A. Rajendran and Adelaide Lord Mayor Dr Jane Lomax‑Smith unveiled Union Square, buried a stainless‑steel time capsule and planted a Bunga Tanjung sapling to symbolise friendship. The capsule will be opened on 8 December 2033 during the 60‑year celebrations.[1][2]

Design and Features

Covering roughly 400 m², the square is choreographed around a chevron of granite pavers that thread between endemic shrubs and budding Bunga Tanjung trees. Low stone walls double as seating, and a bubbler fountain masks traffic noise while cooling the micro‑climate. Multilingual plaques and QR codes narrate the sister‑city story.[1][2]

After dark, solar bollards trace the pathways, discreet CCTV links to MBPP’s Safe City network, free public Wi‑Fi lets visitors download heritage maps, and USB ports in the benches cater to digital nomads.

Climate‑Smart Landscaping

Species were chosen from the Climate‑Resilient Urban Tree Species Study for Malaysia. Permeable joints and subsurface trenches absorb storm‑run‑off, while the fountain recirculates harvested rainwater—measures expected to trim pavement temperatures by 4–5 °C on typical afternoons.[3]

An early Think City survey recorded surface temperatures 3 °C cooler than a neighbouring asphalt lane and a 37 % jump in lunchtime pedestrian counts, demonstrating both environmental and social dividends.[3]

Construction and Inauguration

Work began in early 2023 with surface stripping and utility rationalisation. Bio‑char‑amended soil, permeable granite and native plantings followed. The RM 1 million cost was shared between a UN Adaptation Fund grant for PNBCAP and MBPP’s Greening George Town budget. Landscaping finished in July 2024, ready for the opening ceremony on 9 August 2024.[2][3]

Location and Access

Union Square lies midway along Lebuh Union, behind the historic Central Police Station and a short walk from Beach Street’s Victorian banking halls. It is open 24 hours; the free CAT shuttle stops at Bank Negara (≈200 m). Cyclists find hoops at the entrance, and limited kerbside parking is available after business hours.

Context within the UNESCO World Heritage Site

The pocket‑park revival aligns with George Town’s 2008 UNESCO listing, which calls for improved liveability alongside conservation.[4]

Community and Cultural Significance

Weekdays see office workers picnicking, while weekends host artisan stalls selling Penang snacks and Adelaide‑inspired Frog Cakes. Schools schedule “shade walks”, and survey kiosks record a 94 % approval rating.[1]

Future Plans

Phase II will install smart sensors to log air‑temperature, humidity and footfall; data will feed PNBCAP’s public dashboard. Adelaide is planning a reciprocal Penang‑themed micro‑park in its Central Market, while annual “Light‑to‑Light” art exchanges and citizen‑science workshops are being drafted.[3]
