Opium Smokers Diorama, Pinaon Time Tunnel (2 November 2013)

The
Opium Smokers is one of the dioramas at the History Museum in
George Town, Penang. Opium smoking was a scourge, particularly on the penniless coolies who first too opium as a form of relief for the harshness of life. Quickly becaming addicted, they found themselves unable to liberate themselves from a life of indentured labour.
The opium problem was made worse by the fact that those who control the opium trade also also running the government as well as prominent members of the society. So, for a long while, there wasn't a conceited effort to suppress opium addiction.
