Mesjid Road, off Chulia Street. The proposed park will cover 0.24 acres of land area.
Appreciating the Historical Significance of this Site
The Mosque Street area was part of the Indian Muslim neighbourhood that extends across the length of Chulia Street until the second half of the 19th century, when the influence of the Indian community in the area was gradually supplanted by newly arriving Cantonese immigrants. At the same time, the kampong houses and Anglo-Indian bungalows were replaced by brick shophouses with limited frontage facing Chulia Street.
By the early part of the 20th century, the transformation of Chulia Street was complete. Safe for remnants of Muslim places of worship, the street has taken on a more distinct Chinese character.
