The Campbell Street Arch (GPS: 5.41896, 100.33174) is a cast-iron arch at the western junction of Campbell Street facing Penang Road. Completed in July 1999, it is part of the beautification of Campbell Street carried out by the then Penang Island Municipal Council (MPPP), to create the pedestrianised Medan Lebuh Campbell. The cost of the beautification, along with the installation of widened sidewalks and stainless steel benches along the street, was RM2.3 million.
The beautification project has been criticised as being implemented without practical consideration, and is blamed for worsening congestion along Campbell Street. The stainless steel benches are also deemed impractical, as they are too hot to be sat upon during the day.
