Market St Ghaut Park is a public park proposed by the
George Town Special Area Plan. It covers what is presently a dilapidated hawker centre between
Weld Quay and
Victoria Street. The urban park will cover an area of 0.57 acres, providing some greenery to visitors arriving at
Pengkalan Raja Tun Uda.
Appreciating the Historical Significance of this Site
Until the third quarter of the 19th century, the Market Street Ghaut site was at water's edge, when the shore was at
Beach Street. During low tide, the area was mudflats where piers stretch out to the sea, enabling boats to berth. At high tide, boats can reach all the way to the
ghauts, the stone steps that led up to Beach Street.
The earliest market of George Town developed in this area. The people were predominantly South Indian, a character the remains to this day in the Little India neighbourhood of
Market Street.
