Proposed Market Lane Park

Market Lane Park is a public park off Market Lane proposed by the George Town Special Area Plan. It will cover just 0.47 acres. The park will occupy public areas such as the Market Lane Tuak Shop.

Appreciating the History of this Site

A continuation of Market Street, Market Lane in the old days received spill-over traffic from the main market area in George Town. Long before Sia Boey become a hive of market activities, it was along this street that the peoples congregated.

In the 19th century, before the reclamation created Weld Quay, the market area of George Town stretches all the way to the shore, where fresh fish were brought in through piers and jetties. That area is now being proposed for the Market St Ghaut Park.
