Rivers in Malaysia form one of the country's most important natural resources, shaping its geography, history, economy and biodiversity. Malaysia's river network is among the most extensive in Southeast Asia. These rivers have influenced settlement patterns for centuries, with many of Malaysia's oldest towns developing near river mouths or along navigable waterways. Peninsular Malaysia contains numerous medium-sized river systems that generally flow either westwards into the Straits of Malacca or eastwards into the South China Sea. In contrast, Sabah and Sarawak possess some of Southeast Asia's largest tropical river systems, draining vast rainforest catchments that remain important for biodiversity, indigenous communities and inland transportation.2
The Rajang River in Sarawak is Malaysia's longest river, stretching approximately 565 kilometres from the Iran Mountains to the South China Sea. The Kinabatangan River is Sabah's longest river, measuring approximately 560 kilometres. It is internationally renowned for its exceptional biodiversity, supporting proboscis monkeys, orangutans, pygmy elephants, crocodiles, hornbills and numerous other wildlife species. The lower Kinabatangan floodplain is recognised as one of Malaysia's most important wildlife conservation areas.4
The Pahang River is the longest river in Peninsular Malaysia, extending for approximately 459 kilometres. Formed by the confluence of the Jelai and Tembeling rivers, it flows through much of Pahang before entering the South China Sea near Pekan. Historically, the river served as an important transportation corridor linking the interior with the coast.5
The Perak River flows for about 400 kilometres through the state of Perak from Hulu Perak to the Straits of Malacca. It supports hydroelectric dams, irrigation systems and agriculture while also being closely associated with the history of the Perak Sultanate. The river has long been one of western Peninsular Malaysia's most important waterways.6
The Kelantan River drains much of northeastern Peninsular Malaysia. Formed by the confluence of the Galas and Lebir rivers, it flows northwards through Kota Bharu before reaching the South China Sea. Other notable Malaysian rivers include the Sungai Klang, Sungai Langat, Sungai Selangor, Sungai Bernam, Sungai Muar, Sungai Endau, Sungai Terengganu, Sungai Baram, Sungai Limbang, Batang Lupar, Batang Sadong, Sungai Kinabatangan, Sungai Segama and Sungai Padas. Each contributes to regional development through water supply, transportation, agriculture, tourism or hydroelectric generation.8
Several Malaysian rivers flow through more than one state, illustrating how river basins often extend beyond administrative boundaries. Among the best-known examples is the Bernam River, which forms much of the boundary between Perak and Selangor before flowing into the Straits of Malacca. The Endau River similarly forms part of the boundary between Johor and Pahang, while the Muar River originates in Negeri Sembilan before flowing through Johor.9
The Klang River begins in Selangor, flows through the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur and then re-enters Selangor before reaching Port Klang. Likewise, the Langat River Basin extends into parts of Negeri Sembilan and the Federal Territory of Putrajaya, even though the main river flows primarily through Selangor. These interstate river systems require coordinated management among multiple state and federal agencies.9
Within the Klang Valley, a few rivers flow through Kuala Lumpur into Selangor. They include Sungai Gombak, Sungai Klang and Sungai Penchala.
On the southern part of the Peninsula, Sungai Kesang forms the border between Johor and Malacca. Over on the north, Sungai Jarak and Sungai Kulim flow from Kedah into Penang while Sungai Kerian flows through three states: Kedah, Perak and Penang.
In East Malaysia, river basins are even larger. Tributaries of the Rajang, Baram and Kinabatangan rivers drain extensive mountainous regions that cross multiple administrative divisions, although not state boundaries. Their enormous catchments highlight the scale of river systems found on the island of Borneo.10
Malaysia's rivers provide drinking water to millions of people. Major water treatment plants extract raw water from rivers such as the Selangor, Langat, Perak and Pahang rivers before distributing treated water to homes, industries and businesses. Reliable river systems are therefore fundamental to the country's economic development and public health.11
Agriculture also depends heavily upon rivers. Paddy fields, fruit orchards, oil palm plantations and vegetable farms rely upon river water for irrigation. In rural areas, rivers remain important sources of freshwater fish and prawns while supporting aquaculture and traditional fisheries.11
Several major hydroelectric schemes have been developed on Malaysian rivers, including those associated with the Perak River, Kenyir Lake, Bakun Dam and Murum Dam. Malaysia's rivers support some of the richest freshwater ecosystems in Southeast Asia. Upper catchments flowing through tropical rainforests provide habitats for freshwater fish, amphibians, reptiles, mammals and birds. Heavy rainfall associated with the northeast and southwest monsoons can cause flooding in many Malaysian river basins. Flood-prone rivers include the Kelantan, Pahang, Klang, Muar and Terengganu rivers. Government agencies have invested extensively in flood mitigation infrastructure such as dams, retention ponds, river widening projects, levees, pumping stations and real-time monitoring systems.14
The Department of Irrigation and Drainage operates nationwide flood forecasting and river monitoring networks that provide early warnings during periods of intense rainfall. These systems help reduce flood risks for communities living along major rivers.14
Rapid urbanisation and industrialisation have increased pressure on many Malaysian rivers through pollution, sedimentation and habitat loss. In response, government agencies, universities, environmental organisations and local communities have undertaken river rehabilitation programmes, pollution control initiatives and educational campaigns promoting sustainable river management.15
Integrated River Basin Management has become an increasingly important approach to balancing economic development with environmental conservation. These programmes seek to protect water quality, restore river habitats and ensure sustainable use of Malaysia's freshwater resources for future generations.15
