Sentul Barat MRT Station (PY16) is an underground station on the MRT Putrajaya Line, located in the historic suburb of Sentul, Kuala Lumpur. It lies between Jalan Ipoh MRT Station (PY15) to the northwest and Titiwangsa MRT Station (PY17) to the southeast.
The station began operations on 16 March 2023, coinciding with the opening of Phase Two of the MRT Putrajaya Line1. It provides convenient access to the densely populated Sentul area and parts of Jalan Pahang, serving as a key public transit hub for both residential and commercial zones in northern Kuala Lumpur2.
Sentul Barat MRT Station is approximately 4.2 kilometres north of Dataran Merdeka3.
Sentul Barat MRT Station is built underground with an island platform design serving two tracks. The station features three entrances strategically located around Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah and Jalan Sentul to improve pedestrian accessibility. The architectural design reflects the area’s industrial heritage and urban renewal, using minimalist materials and efficient lighting4.
Sentul Barat MRT Station serves one of Kuala Lumpur’s oldest neighbourhoods. Sentul, originally developed by the Federated Malay States Railways in the early 1900s, retains much of its railway heritage while transforming into a modern urban enclave. Nearby landmarks include the Sentul Depot arts complex, Sentul Park, and the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (KLPac)5.
The station enhances connectivity for Sentul residents, linking them with key points in Kuala Lumpur through the Klang Valley Mass Transit Network. It also complements the nearby Sentul Komuter Station and Sentul Timur LRT Station, enabling transfers between the MRT, KTM Komuter, and Ampang Line LRT systems6.
“Sentul Barat” means “West Sentul” in Malay, a reference to its position relative to the parallel Sentul Timur LRT Station (“East Sentul”). Together, they bookend a century-old neighbourhood that evolved from a railway town into one of Kuala Lumpur’s most characterful suburbs7.
