Kentonmen MRT Station (PY14)


Kentonmen MRT Station (PY14) is an elevated station on the MRT Putrajaya Line, serving the Jalan Ipoh–Sentul area of Kuala Lumpur. It lies between Kampung Batu MRT Station (PY13) to the northwest and Jalan Ipoh MRT Station (PY15) to the southeast.

The station opened on 16 June 2022 as part of Phase One of the MRT Putrajaya Line1. It serves the northern stretch of Jalan Ipoh (now officially renamed Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah in this section) and provides convenient access to the adjacent Kentonmen military base and industrial estates. The name “Kentonmen” derives from the Malay word for “cantonment,” reflecting its proximity to the Malaysian Armed Forces’ base in Sentul2.

The station is located approximately 6.5 kilometres north of Dataran Merdeka, the traditional Zero Mile of Kuala Lumpur3.

Its design theme reflects industrial practicality, blending concrete and metallic elements4.

Surrounding Area

The station serves a mixed-use area dominated by light industrial developments, warehouses, and military facilities. It is adjacent to the Kementerian Pertahanan (Ministry of Defence) Kentonmen Complex, which inspired the station’s name. Several residential areas such as Taman Kok Lian, Taman Million, and parts of Sentul Pasar also fall within its catchment area5.

Connectivity

Kentonmen MRT Station offers feeder bus links via Rapid KL, providing connections to neighbourhoods along Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah and nearby Sentul. The station also lies close to arterial roads connecting to the Federal Highway and Duta–U Turn Expressway (DUKE, E33)6.

Fun Fact

The “Kentonmen” spelling retains the older Malay orthography of “cantonment.” The name serves as a reminder of Kuala Lumpur’s colonial-era military presence, as Sentul and Jalan Ipoh once hosted major railway and defence facilities under British administration7.
