Kampung Datuk Keramat is one of the oldest Malay-majority neighbourhoods in Kuala Lumpur. Located about 5 kilometres northeast of Dataran Merdeka, the traditional Zero Mile of the city, it is a culturally rich and well-connected suburb that blends heritage homes with modern urban living.
The area that became Kampung Datuk Keramat has roots dating back to the early 20th century, when it was established as a traditional Malay village along the banks of the Klang River. Its name is said to have been derived from a local spiritual leader, Datuk Keramat, reflecting the area’s early Malay cultural and religious significance1.
Over time, the settlement evolved from a rural kampung into a suburban community, maintaining a strong local identity even as Kuala Lumpur modernised rapidly around it. The completion of Dato’ Keramat LRT Station and Jelatek LRT Station in the late 1990s improved accessibility, connecting residents directly to central Kuala Lumpur and beyond2.
Despite being close to the city centre, Kampung Datuk Keramat retains its traditional charm. Many of its lanes still feature wooden stilt houses, small suraus, and local food stalls serving Malay favourites such as nasi lemak, mee goreng, and satay. The Pasar Keramat wet market is a popular spot for daily essentials, while the neighbourhood mosque, Masjid Al-Akram, stands as a prominent community landmark3.
Kampung Datuk Keramat’s property market reflects a mix of traditional homes, low-rise flats, and newer condominiums. Due to its proximity to Ampang and Ampang Hilir, it has become attractive to those seeking more affordable housing near Kuala Lumpur’s central business district. Notable developments include the Datum Jelatek complex and several mid-range apartment projects along Jalan Jelatek4.
The neighbourhood is well-served by the Kelana Jaya LRT Line, with Dato’ Keramat LRT Station and Jelatek LRT Station located within walking distance for many residents. Rapid KL buses also connect the area to surrounding districts including Setiawangsa and Ampang. The Federal Highway and the Ampang–Kuala Lumpur Elevated Highway (AKLEH, E12) provide convenient road access to downtown Kuala Lumpur.
Kampung Datuk Keramat is the birthplace of several notable Malaysian personalities, including national footballers and politicians, contributing to its reputation as a proud, community-driven neighbourhood5.
