Jinjang is a large suburban neighbourhood in northwestern Kuala Lumpur, lying approximately 9 kilometres northwest of downtown Kuala Lumpur, measured from Dataran Merdeka, the traditional Zero Mile of the city1. Once regarded as a resettlement area during the Malayan Emergency, Jinjang has evolved into a lively residential and commercial zone with a distinct local identity.
Jinjang’s history dates back to the early 1950s when it was established as a “New Village” under the British colonial government’s Briggs Plan2. The purpose was to resettle Chinese villagers during the Malayan Emergency to prevent communist influence in rural areas. Over the decades, Jinjang expanded organically and became known for its strong sense of community, traditional markets, and evolving mix of housing types.
Despite modernisation in surrounding areas, Jinjang retains much of its old-town character. The neighbourhood is divided into Jinjang Utara (North Jinjang) and Jinjang Selatan (South Jinjang), each with its own markets, schools, and housing clusters. It is home to long-established family-run businesses, local eateries, and a diverse population that reflects Kuala Lumpur’s social fabric.
Property in Jinjang ranges from traditional single-storey homes and old terrace houses to newer semi-detached units and serviced apartments. Recent developments in nearby Kepong and the Desa ParkCity area have also influenced Jinjang’s gradual gentrification, with improving amenities and rising land values3.
Jinjang is easily accessible via Federal Highway connections through Jalan Kuching and Jalan Kepong. Public transport is provided by Rapid KL bus routes serving Jinjang Utara and Jinjang Selatan, as well as the nearby Jinjang MRT Station on the Putrajaya Line4.
Jinjang was once nicknamed “Jinjang Joe” in Malaysian popular culture, a phrase used humorously to describe rough-and-ready street youth from the 1970s and 1980s5.
