Kafe 2828 char koay teow stall
Kafe 2828 char koay teow stall (4 April 2015)

Kafe 2828 Char Koay Teow is a now ceased char koay teow stall that began selling at Kafe 2828 since early 2015. I learned about the stall on my Penang Hawker Food Facebook Group, so my wife and I decided to go there to check it out.

I have only tried this char koay teow once before I discover that it has stopped selling.

Tim's Taste Test

4 April, 2015
We visited Kafe Dua Lapan Dua Lapan for lunch. My wife had originally wanted to eat the gu bak koay teow, but decided at the last moment to try out the char koay teow instead. We ordered two "big" plates with duck eggs. The signboard on top says it's RM6.00. However the hawker pointed to his price list on the table, and said it is RM6.50. We agreed to the price (though personally I felt he should update his signboard to reflect the right price). We asked for less spicy for my wife, and extra spicy for me.

This is how the two plates of char koay teow look like:

Each plate has two huge prawns. The prawns are succulent and not overcooked. The duck-egg char koay teow is also delicious. It compares favorably to the last visit I made to my favourite Carnarvon Street Tiger Char Koay Teow, where on that visit, I found it to be not flavorful enough (boh3 kao1 bi33sor3), and not as tasty as before.

On the negative side, I find the portion at Kafe 2828 to be quite small. I had the char koay teow at one o'clock in the afternoon, but by three o'clock, I was already hungry again (and luckily by sister-in-law brought some pasembur, and so I was eating again within two hours).

Before I left the stall, I told the hawker (whose name I found out later to be Ah Hock) that his char koay teow is tasty but his portion is too small. I have no complaints about the price of RM6.50 as I have eaten even more expensive char koay teow, but I feel the "big" plate is not "big". Moreover, the price as shown in the signage is misleading.

When I was at Kafe 2828, I noticed that the gu bak koay teow stall getting fewer customers. Yes, while some were still ordering it, the business was slightly slower, as most customers opted for the economy rice. The char koay teow was also a bit slow. Perhaps not many people have tied it out yet.

Food Rating
Kafe 2828 Char Koay Teow Rating (4 April 2015): A-

Both my wife and I agree that the char koay teow is delicious, whether less spicy or extra spicy. I will go ahead to give it an A- and revisit the stall in future, to see if there is an improvement in the portion size. If yes, I will move it to A. I will also revisit the Carnarvon Street Tiger Char Koay Teow in future, to see if the deterioration in taste is permanent. If yes, then it will lose its A+ and a possible candidate for that A+ could be this stall, if it takes care of what I have aforementioned.
