Toyohashi (Japanese: 豊橋市) is a major city in
Aichi Prefecture, Japan. It covers 261 sq km and has a population of 384,000 people (2012 estimate). It was the second largest city in Aichi Prefecture until 2005, when the city of
Toyota absorbed six surrounding municipalities to surpass it in population.
According to archaeologists, the Toyohashi area bears evidence of human habitation going back to the Japanese Paleolithic period, which is some 10,000 BC. The present town of Toyohashi dates to 1879 following the Meiji Restoration. It attained city status in 1906.
The city of Toyohashi hosts a number of festival every year, among them the Toyohashi Festival, Spring Festival, Demon Festival, Gion Festival and Iris Flower Festival.
