Okayama Prefecture (岡山県) is a prefecture of Japan in the Chugoku region of Honshu. It covers 7,112.32 sq km and has a population of close to two million people (2011 estimate). The capital and biggest city is Okayama City.
Okayama Prefecture is bordered by Tottori Prefecture to the north, Hyogo Prefecture to the east and Hiroshima Prefecture to the west. It faces the Seto Inland Sea to the south, across which lies the island of Shikoku. It was formed during the Meiji Restoration by merging Bitchu Province, Bizen Province and Mimasaka Province.
Okayama Prefecture is one of the prefectures in Japan to suffer from urban drain, with the rural areas ageing and decline in population.
