Chugoku is the westernmost region of the island of Honshu in Japan. The name Chugoku actually means "middle country", a name derived from the historical division of Japan, where regions were described based on their distances from the capital - either Kyoto or Nara.
The region of Chugoku today comprises the prefectures of Hiroshima, Okayama, Shimane, Tottori and Yamaguchi. It is a region with irregular rolling hills and only a limited number of flat areas.
