Kanto is one of the five regions of the island of Honshu in Japan. This is the region that includes the Greater Tokyo Area, and encompasses the prefectures of Chiba, Gunma, Ibaraki, Kanagawa, Saitama, Tochigi and Tokyo. The Kanto Plain occupies 40% of the area of Kanto region, while the rest consists of hills and mountains.
The Kanto region is the highest populated in Japan. It has a population of 42 million people, accounting for a third of the population of Japan. The region was at the center of feudal power during the Kamakura period and Edo period of the history of Japan.
As Kanto region is where the Tokyo-Yokohama metropolitan area is located, it is the location of Japan's seat of government, and has the largest number of universities and cultural institutions in the country.
