Jalan Baru, also written as Jalan Bahru, is a major rural road in Balik Pulau, Penang. It runs over a distance of close to 7 kilometers on the west side of the district, and forms the main artery connecting the villages of the west coast.
Laid in the early 20th century, Jalan Baru means "new road", a name given for want of something better. Since then, places located along the road has also taken the name. One of the rivers flowing west is called Sungai Kuala Jalan Baru after the road, and the village at the mouth of the river became known as Kuala Jalan Baru. Finally, the road leading from Jalan Baru to Kuala Jalan Baru was given the name Jalan Kuala Jalan Baru, literally "New Road Estuary Road".
Due to its length, some parts of Jalan Baru may also take on local names. The southern section of Jalan Baru, for example, is often called Jalan Sekolah Agama ("Religious School Road") due to the presence of a Muslim religous school in the area. There are many places that you can visit from Jalan Baru. There is Countryside Stables, Kuala Sungai Burong and Pantai Malindo, to name some.
