Pathankot (Punjabi: ਪਠਾਨਕੋਟ) is a city on the northern part of Punjab state in northern India. Located 331 m (1,086 ft) above sea level, it has a population of 254,000 people (2012 estimate). It is within a section of Punjab that is close to the border with Himachal Pradesh to the east, Jammu and Kashmir to the north and Pakistan to the west.
Pathankot was named after the villages of Paithan and Kot which were located on either sides of the river Chakki. It was the British who first recorded the site at Pathankot. Archaeological excavations have revealed evidence of human settlement on the ancient sites of Paithan and Kot.
Pathankot is a railway hub. There are train services from major cities such as Delhi (8 hours away) and Amritsar (2 hours away). From here, you can take trains to other cities in Punjab and neighbouring states.
