Festive Feast - Tok Wan 101 Recipes food review
My wife and I had the privilege of an invitation to sample Vistana Penang Bukit Jambul's Festive Feast - Tok Wan 101 Recipes Ramadan Buffet on 23 May, 2017. The buffet, which is held at the Grand Ballroom of the hotel, was to start at 6:30pm, so we thought we would be early in arriving at 6:10pm. But no. When we got there, we saw that there was already a large number of guests who have arrived even earlier than us, and some have already started to partake of the dishes. So we quickly went into action to photograph all the dishes before they were messed up.
There is a stupendous amount of food at the Tok Wan 101 Recipes buffet. The dishes were arrayed throughout the foyer of the Grand Ballroom, and they even spilled onto the sidewalk.
I am amazed that, for this mountain of food, the price of this buffet is just RM70nett per person. I hear that, on top of this, there is an early bird special which will bring the price even further down.
Surveying the dishes, I saw that they are separated out into various stations. Arrayed down the middle of the foyer are the main dishes. Along the wall I saw the various kuih-muih, beverages, ulam, kerabu, sauces, sweet broth and even boiled cockles. On the side in front of the window, there's murtabak, laksa, bread and ais kacang, among others. And outside on the sidewalk, there's lots of grilled items, and a whole Kambing Panggang, is over the fire.
Among the main dishes featured include daging rendang, ikan cencaru belah belakang, ayam goreng berempah, rendang itik, gulai daging and siput belitung masak lemak cili padi. The dessert station is a rainbow of colours, consisting of various Malay kuih-muih including onde-onde, seri muka, ketayap, kuih lapis, kuih loyang and kuih cara, along with Western cakes, puddings and mousses.
To top of the evening, the hotel even provided us with live entertainment. It was a wonderful evening. We ate so much and so well that night. My wife and I register our heartfelt thanks to Vistana Penang Bukit Jambul for giving us the pleasure of enjoying this buffet.
