Aosta is the main town in the Aosta Valley, in northwestern Italy. Due to its proximity of France the Switzerland, many of the inhabitants here also speak French. The city covers 21.37 sq km (8.25 sq mi) and has a population of 35,000 people (2012 estimate).
Aosta was established in pre-Roman times. It came under Roman rule before 25 BC, and was made the capital of the Roman province of Alpes Graies in 11 BC. After the fall of the Roman Empire, it was conquered by the Burgundians, the Ostrogoths, the Byzantines, the Lombards and the Franks.
Today Aosta has many historic monuments that are worth exploring. Its ancient town walls have been exceptionally well preserved. It encloses a rectangular area covering 725 meters by 571 meters.
