Boon San Tong Khoo Kongsi Public Plaza is a proposed public realm of the
George Town Special Area Plan. It surrounds the courtyard of
Boon San Tong Khoo Kongsi, the more serene of the two major Khoo Kongsi ancestral temples. The park faces
Victoria Street and is surrounded by the Chinese trades and merchantile neighbourhood.
Appreciating the History of this Site
Victoria Street in front of this urban park marks the shoreline which existed right up to the early part of the 20th century, giving the ancestral temple a sea frontage. That waterfront location was lost when land reclamation extended the shoreline, in the process creating Victoria Street, and ending with
Weld Quay. Within a period of just three decades (1880-1907), the beach-side temple became surrounded by merchantile buildings.
