Proposed Bishop Street Park

Bishop Street Park is a proposed public park in the George Town Special Area Plan. It occupies the site of a former shophouse behind the Logan Building. The area covers just 0.15 acres.

Appreciating the history of this site

Although now transformed into an urban park, the site was the main shopping precinct in the early 20th century, when some of the most upscale European stores are found. As the shopping precinct relocates from the heart of George Town, the banking and financial sectors expand to occupy the area, turning Bishop Street into one of the main banking streets of George Town.

Many of the shophouses in the vicinity of the Bishop Street Park are quite recent, having been built no more than 100 years ago, despite the area having been developed for over 200 years. As this is prime real estate, the properties here have been frequently redeveloped according to the needs of its particular period.
