Bayan Baru Roundabout (20 May 2012)


Bayan Baru Roundabout (GPS: 5.33164, 100.29524) is the biggest roundabout on Penang Island. Occasionally also known as the Tun Dr Awang Roundabout, it connects Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah with Jalan Tun Dr Awang and the Bayan Lepas Expressway. The Bayan Lepas Elevated Highway is also part of Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah at the Bayan Baru Roundabout.

The Bayan Baru Roundabout was built to ensure smooth traffic in the Bayan Baru township. It was created in the late 1970's, but has been modified a few times over the decades.

Updates on the Bayan Baru Roundabout

The Star reports that developer Hunza Properties is planning to submit planning permission to build an underpass at the Bayan Baru Roundabout. The 0.5-km underpass will possibly enable traffic from the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway to bypass the roundabout towards Jalan Tun Dr Awang, to facilitate access to the Penang International Commercial City which is under construction.
