Ah Goo Wan Tan Mee, Kedai Kopi Sai Lam (3 March 2018)
Ah Goo Wan Tan Mee (GPS: 5.41822, 100.33641) is a wan than mee stall in Kedai Kopi Sai Lam in George Town, Penang. Now, there are in fact several wan tan mee stalls in Penang that go by the name "Ah Goo" or "Ah Niu" (阿牛). Even on Carnarvon Street itself, where I discovered this stall. The only other "Ah Goo" Wan Tan Mee stall that I have tried is the one in Sungai Ara, however, this post is about the one at Kedai Kopi Sai Lam.
I was told by a member of my Penang Hawker Food Facebook Group that the stall was set up by a man named Ah Ngau ("ngau" is cow in Cantonese). He has since retired.
I discovered this stall when I was staying at Yeng Keng Hotel. In the evening, we walked down Chulia Street and saw this stall.
There were three ladies operating the stall. The woman who is making the wan than mee is the granddaughter of the founder of the stall, which has been operating since 1940. She is being assisted by her mother. Another woman was preparing the wan than. I think she is also a relative.
Since I do not usually visit this part of town, this is the first time I have tried the wan than mee. I particularly like the wan than, which are very meaty. They look like ground balls of minced meat. I took photos as well as video of the wan than mee stall which I shall post here. Let me show you some shots now.
