Tuition centres, in the Malaysian contexts, refer to after-school classes provided by private establishments. These are often manned by retired teachers as well as, in some cases, working teachers after school hours. Due to the paper chase pravelent in local society, tuition centres have become part of student life in Penang, due in part to parents' anxiety to get their children ahead, as well as a lack of confidence in the quality of school education.
Tuition classes can take many forms, from home tutoring to classroom environments. Many such centres are found in housing estates where there is a high density of school-going population.
