Roasted Duck

Sliced Roasted Duck

Chinese Roasted Duck

Sio Ark or roasted duck, is a specialty that is usually sold by the vendor selling roasted meat. Ducks are usually sold whole, and the price has risen to over RM30 per duck. The most popular place to enjoy roasted duck in Penang is at Lunas, which is technically in Kedah.

Sio Ark Pooi, or roasted duck rice, is another specialty, though more expensive and less popular than chicken rice. Compared to chicken rice, duck rice is darker and heavier in texture. Roasted duck can be taken as it is or made into kiam chye boey, which is a salted vegetable soup served with duck rice. Kiam chye boey is prepared by cooking kiam chye with leftover parts of the duck. To make the soup more tasty, sio bak (roasted pork), huan-jio kua (dried chilli), asam phooi (asam gelugor / garcinia atroviridis) and hiau kor (shiitake mushrooms) are added. A dark chilli dip is also served to go with the meat, while the rice is drenched with ark-chap (duck gravy).
