Penang Buddhist Association Jalan Anson, George Town
Penang Buddhist Association Location Map
The Penang Buddhist Association is a religious institution located at Jalan Anson in George Town. It was founded by a group of Straits Chinese Buddhists who wanted to study Buddhism in its pure, uncorrupted form, untainted by elements of Taoism that is prevalent among the local Chinese. To achieve that, they founded the association in 1925. The present structure was completed in 1931 in the late Straits Eclectic style.
The interior of the Penang Buddhist Association is ornately decorated with polished floor titles, multi-tiered chandeliars, and mother-of-pearl inlaid furnishing. The high-vaulted main hall houses several statues of the various incarnation of Buddha.
The housing estate behind the association was developed by it in the 1930s, hence the roads bear Buddhist names such as Dharma, Deva Pada, Bodhi and Nirvana.
How to go to the Penang Buddhist Association
The Penang Buddhist Association is located along Jalan Anson, or Anson Road, which is a one-way street. If you are coming from the direction of Komtar, take Jalan Macalister until the Jalan Anson junction, then turn left into Jalan Anson. The Penang Buddhist Association is on the right side of Jalan Anson with Padang Brown on the direct opposite side of the road. The Penang Buddhist Association can be contacted at +60-4-2280910.
What to see or do
More a devotional site than a tourist site, the Penang Buddhist Association is nonetheless worth a visit. Admire the eclectic-style architecture that combines western elements into a Buddhist temple, from its chandeliers to its Buddhist motifs.
