Kampung Makam
Kampung Makam is a Malay settlement founded by an Achehnese religious teacher named Haji Kassim. It has existed since around 1840, when sampans can go all the way up Sungai Pinang to reach it. Despite urbanisation of George Town, a big section of the city such as Kampung Makam continues to retain its village ambience. The Malay settlements stretch all along Sungai Pinang from Jelutong - where we find Masjid Maqbul and Masjid Jamek Sungai Pinang, all the way to Jalan Langkawi at the junction of Jalan Air Itam.
Kampung Makam was named after the mausoleum to Haji Kassim. Before that, it was known as Pengkalan Haji Kassim, after the pier built by Haji Kassim for sampans to berth at the settlement. Haji Kassim also built the village mosque, now called Masjid Haji Kassim. It is still in existence today, and is accessed from Jalan Dato Keramat.
