The
Chronological History of Penang presents glimpses of events and circumstances surrounding the founding of the island in the late 18th century.
The names of places, the character of the streets, the very essence of Penang can be traced to events happening in places thousands of miles away, hundreds of years ago.
In this study, we look at significant chapters in world history, as they unraveled in China, India, Portugal, the Netherlands, Britain, Siam (Thailand), Burma (Myanmar), Indonesia, Singapore and the Malay peninsula, to appreciate how each has shaped Penang as we know it today.
