Pulau Kentut Besar, Langkawi

Pulau Kentut Besar (gPS: 6.23962, 99.72204) is a small island in Langkawi. It is located to the southwest of Pulau Langkawi, and to the northeast of Pulau Beras Basah. Next to it is the smaller Pulau Kentut Kecil.

The name Pulau Kentut Besar actually translate as "big fart island" in Malay. This is an example of how the locals name places at a time when nothing has to be politically correct. I have to say that I prefer such a carefree innocence to naming places. To me, this is better than to have it named - as is the practise nowadays - after some name-chasing politician.

There is in fact a legend (don't they always!) associated with Pulau Kentut Besar and its little sibling, Pulau Kentut Kecil. It's back to the story of that eventful wedding between the daughter of Gunung Machincang and son of Gunung Raya.

The family of the bride served half-cooked rice to the groom who, upon consuming it, farted twice, creating the two islands in the process. The indignity triggered more commotion in the wedding which created the rest of the places in Langkawi including Kuah and Belanga Pecah.
