Thendayabani Muthumariamman Chettiar Temple, Balik Pulau (14 June 2007)
V.T.M. Chettiar's Temple (GPS: 5.35237, 100.2308) is a major Hindu temple in
Balik Pulau. Also called the
Thendayabani Muthumariamman Chettiar Temple, it is located on the road leading towards Sungai Pinang. The temple was first built in the 1880's, when the Indians came to Balik Pulau to serve as labourers in the plantations for the local council.
The Thendayabani Muthumariamman Chettiar Temple has a central gopuram with ornate sculptures, and a gateway with carvings on the pediment. It is dedicated to the Hindu deity Subramaniam and the female deity Mariamman. Vaigasi is the feast day of the temple. It is celebrated over three days in the month of May.
