Mỹ Tho is an ideal place to observe the rural way of life in southern Vietnam. Some of the most engaging sights come from the rivers and canals. The houses are on stilts right over the water. Further inland is a city of wide boulevards, a reflection of French influence since the 1860s. The capture of Mỹ Tho by French forces completed French colonialization of Cochinchina.

Today Mỹ Tho is a thriving city. Its economy is still based on primary commodities such as coconuts, bananas and longan. It is becoming increasingly popular with tourists, particularly on day trips from Ho Chi Minh City.

Where food is concerned, the local specialty is a noodle soup called Hu Tieu Mỹ Tho, a clear pork broth with rice vermicelli, egg noodles, sliced pork meat, fresh shrimp, and often deep-fried wanton, and garnished with salad leaves, garlic chives, bean sprouts and fresh chili.

Visiting Mỹ Tho

You can take a bus or book a day tour from Ho Chi Minh City. If traveling independently, you can move about Mỹ Tho by hiring a motorbike taxi.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
