Biên Hòa, Vietnam

Biên Hòa is a city in Dong Nai Province in southern Vietnam. The city has a population of about 650,000 people, making it one of the top ten biggest cities in Vietnam. Biên Hòa is located on the main highway (Vietnam Highway 1) that forms the main artery through the country.

Biên Hòa is about 32 km (20 mi) to the east of Ho Chi Minh City. it can be considered a suburb or satellite town to the bigger city. Biên Hòa was just a small town until the First Indochina War (1946-54), which sent an influx of refugees to resettle there. Most of the refugees are Roman Catholics escaping Communist rule and persecution.

Biên Hòa served as a US Air Force Base during the Vietnam War. In the aftermath of the fall of the Republic of Vietnam, Biên Hòa still displayed some resistance to Communist rule from its mostly residents, most of which being refugees that had earlier fled northern Vietnam. The city underwent a period of economic stagnation and decline before it began to grow again towards the end of the 20th century.

Today Biên Hòa is a major industrial center for southern Vietnam. Its economy is lifted by investments flowing in from Japan, Singapore, Taiwan, Malaysia and the United States, among others.
